Improvisation for Alto Flute

The Improvisation for Alto Flute was written in 1987 in response to a request from the flautist Deborah Harris, who has performed the work in several venues. In this work, I tried to capture the quality of a free improvisation, an interior monologue with all its free associations. Because of the brevity of this work, I chose not to make any pre-compositional decisions, rather letting my mind wander in the spirit of an improvisation. My choice of the alto flute was based on the incredibly sensual nature of it's lower register, and the wide range of expression available with this instrument.
